Sanjiv Bhandari travelled to China with a Gubernatorial Trade Mission

Sanjiv Bhandari, AIA, FIIA, principal of BKBC Architects Inc. was a member of the delegation Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. has taken with him to the People’s Republic of China from April 10 to 16, 2013 to meet with the Chinese government and business leaders.

The delegation organized by the Bay Area Council that includes approximately 75 business, economic development, investment and policy leaders from throughout California, assisted Brown in highlighting bilateral trade and investment opportunities between the two regions and inaugurated a new California foreign trade and investment office in Shanghai. Several senior administration officials also accompanied the delegation, while visiting four major metropolitan areas of China, including, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong.

During this trade mission, Governor Brown signed a historic international tradeagreement with the Chinese Ministry of Commerce and government official from Jiangsu, Inner Mongolia, Shanghai, Shandong, Guangdong and Chongqing.  In Beijing, US Ambassador, Gary Locke hosted a reception in US Embassy for over 300 delegates including Chinese business leaders and Investors gathered by the US Foreign Commercial Service and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.

A central event for the California Trade Mission in Beijing was a summit in the prestigious Tsinghua University to highlight ways in which California and China support each other in a campaign to become carbon-neutral economies. A presentation was given by Dr. Robert Weisenmiller, Chairman of the California Energy Commission.

The journey from Beijing to Shanghai was on a high-speed rail, going at the speed of 186 miles an hour. China now has the world’s longest high-speed rail network with routes stretching over 5,800 miles across country. In Shanghai the central event was the opening of the California-China Office of Trade and Investment & California Investment Forum, which was jointly inaugurated by Governor of California and Mayor of Shanghai.

Sanjiv Bhandari also participated in another major event in Shanghai, the Green Building and Sustainable Development Forum at Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center, which explored the benefits and strategies for smart urban development through US-China cross-border collaboration. Shanghai, “the City above the Sea” with its 23 million populations is a largest City by population in the world. And has become the Global powerhouse, with China’s major financial center, fashion metropolis and an architectural wonder. The ride from Marvell to Pudong International Airport in Shanghai was only 8 minutes via the Shanghai Maglev Train, which is the first commercially operated, high-speed magnetic levitation train line in the world, and reaches up to 500 miles an hour speed. Guangzhou is the capital and largest city of Guangdong Province, where Governor of Guangdong and senior party leaders signed an agreement between California and Chinese government officials on Climate Change issues, Carbon pricing and Trading.
